Know, grow, protect and enjoy South Africa's indigenous plants

Location: Mpumalanga, South Africa

Lowveld Branch

This branch was established in 1971, the same year the Lowveld National Botanical Garden (LNBG) officially opened. The two are intricately linked, as the branch has offered its continual support to the LNBG.

About the branch

The main focus of this branch is on fundraising events, such as the popular yearly Mother’s Day Concert, and on Plant Exploration talks/walks that focus on the botanical extravaganza within the LNBG.

About the Area

Many immediately associate the Lowveld with the Big 5 and the other wild animals of the Kruger National Park, but the landscape and its savanna vegetation is equally special. The Lowveld bushveld can best be seen at some of the area’s must-see sights, such as the Lowveld National Botanical Garden in Mbombela (Nelspruit), Makhonjwa Mountains (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018), the Songimvelo Nature Reserve, Kruger National Park, Sabie/Graskop & escarpment, and Kaapsehoop.

Cool Facts

1.

The LNBG has many firsts for a botanical garden, such as two major rivers running through it, the Crocodile and Nels Rivers, and then their respective spectacular waterfalls, which can be viewed at the Cascades and the Nels viewpoints.

2.

The garden also boasts its own African Rainforest and a suspension bridge known as the SAPPI Aerial Boardwalk (the Lowveld version of the Boomslang at Kirstenbosch).

3.

Cycads form one of the most significant collections in the LNBG, ranking extremely high in species diversity with a large number of striking, mature specimens. The Garden established the very first cycad gene bank in South Africa, thus playing a pivotal role in the conservation of cycads generally and, in particular, of all rare and endangered species.

4.

The Tree Route was BotSoc Lowveld’s signature project for the BotSoc centenary in 2013. It is a circular route through the gardens and identifies over 50 different species each with an information board nearby which is repeated in a composite booklet.
