Know, grow, protect and enjoy South Africa's indigenous plants
Location: Winelands, Western Cape, South Africa
Formed in 1988, the Winelands branch were known locally as the ‘Friends of the Franschhoek Indigenous Medicinal and Herb Garden’ or Peace Garden.
About the branch
This community garden project stands on what was previously an illegal dump site. The branch focus was on local natural heritage, flora conservation and indigenous gardening.
About the Area
This branch covers the western Overberg region and the winelands of the Western Cape. Known for its rolling hills, imperious mountains and picturesque landscapes, this area is home to beautiful fynbos, such as Cape Winelands Shale Fynbos, as well as some of the last remaining stands of critically endangered Renosterveld.
While only 3% of the original Renosterveld Biome is left, most of what is left is protected and located within private reserves.
The Franschoek Medicinal Garden is still thriving under the care of a knowledgeable local, Judah James, and can be found in the town’s Main Road.
The flora of the Winelands is most easily explored by visiting one of its many nature reserves, such as Jonkershoek, Jan Marais, Hottentots Holland, and Helderberg.
Stellenbosch is home to three incredible public gardens: Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden, Old Nectar Gardens, and Stellenbosch University Botanical Gardens.
