Know, grow, protect and enjoy South Africa's indigenous plants

Location: West coast, Western Cape, South Africa

Weskus Branch

The Weskus branch was founded in the early 2000s by a group of locals who are passionate about the conservation of our natural heritage.

About the branch

The area served by this branch stretches from Mamre/Tableview in the south to Riebeek Kasteel and Piketberg in the north, with the Atlantic coast in the west and Darling at the centre. Members meet regularly for outings, including a few longer trips during the flower season, as well as for commenting on conservation matters and discussion groups.

About the Area

The West Coast has all that a nature lover could wish for – from the sea and mountains to plains, with many different types of vegetation, including renosterveld, sandveld and strandveld, as well as varied animal, insect and bird life. The fantastic flowers are the jewels in the crown, of course. There is something to be seen throughout the year, with the peak of the flower season being from mid-July (in the north) to mid-October (in the south).

Cool Facts

1.

The Weskus Branch is integrally involved in the second-oldest wildflower show in the world, the Darling Wildflower Show. Some of the members and their families have been involved with conservation of the area’s flowers for three generations!

2.

This branch is home to an area that is world-renowned for its amazingly diverse flower season experience, which usually starts in July and ends in October.

3.

The Weskus Branch is strong on conservation and makes a point of registering as an Interested and Affected Party (I&AP) for planned developments, so they can keep in touch with what is happening and give input where needed.

4.

The branch is also deeply involved with helping children in local schools learn about the importance of conserving the natural plant and animal biodiversity of the West Coast.
