Know, grow, protect and enjoy South Africa's indigenous plants

Location: Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Algoa Branch

This branch, originally called the Port Elizabeth Branch, was formed in 2002 to serve the Algoa Bay region of the Eastern Cape.

About the branch

It aims to promote conservation of the region’s flora through awareness activities and outings, as well as the local CREW group (Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers).

About the Area

The area is best described in East of the Cape: Conserving Eden by Richard Cowling and Shirley Pierce, where “two great biogeographical kingdoms meet: the Cape to the west and the Afrotropical to the east”. Typical vegetation types include sandstone fynbos and dune thicket.

Cool Facts

1.

Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve, about 40 km west of Gqeberha, conserves a number of endemic, rare and threatened plants and serves as an important environmental education centre to local communities.

2.

Other notable local nature reserves include Addo Elephant Park, Groendal Wilderness Area, The Island Nature Reserve, Kragga Kamma Game Park, and Settlers Park Nature Reserve.

3.

The Kwelera National Botanical Garden in East London is South Africa’s 10th national botanical garden and the first SANBI garden to be established in the Eastern Cape.

With estuarine, riverine, vegetated dune systems and history of human activity, this garden reflects the natural beauty the Wild Coast region has to offer.
