With Dr Pat Holmes, Dr Sue Milton-Dean, Phil McLean, Isabel Johnson

An introduction to ecological restoration

As 2021 is the launch of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, we chat to plant ecologist Dr Pat Holmes about some principles behind ecosystem restoration and how we can play an active role in restoring South Africa’s many damaged ecosystems.

Examples from the Nama Karoo (Dr Sue Milton-Dean), the banks of the Breede & Berg Rivers (Phil McLean) and the KZN Midlands (Isabel Johnson) showcase the variety of restoration work already taking place across South Africa.

  1. I’m living in New Zealand now,SA by birth and have been given the Gerbera as a plant. This looks so like our Barberton daisy? Is it a hybrid of this genus, done here or in SA? I am doing a horticultural course at Otago polytechnic and these things flash into my brain while studying and I’d love to be able to find answers. I’m also trying to reconnect with Dr George Davis if at all possible, hoping he’d be patient enough out of old friendship,to help me.
